Display URL in Pay Per Click Ad’s – New Experiment

When you are find tuning your Google Adwords account say, you follow the few top tips from Google University:

- Create Ads around keywords for example ‘Red Size 3 Shoes’ and link to the relevant products or category on your site.

- Organise you ad groups to match your product catalogue organisation, using the category tree and make sure your special offers are separate.

So?

What is the optimal configuration for a display URL? Especially when the domain name itself has no direct relevance to the search term involved in the ad?

Taking the daintyfeet example:

www.daintyfeet.co.uk
redshoes.daintyfeet.co.uk
www.daintyfeet.co.uk/redshoes

Which of these display URLs would preform better?

Well, as I am currently using adwords for my Hairfreax site, I will run a small test. I will replicate an existing ad and change the display URL to:

dreadlocks.hairfreax.co.uk and www.hairfreax.co.uk/dreadlocks

Using the www in domains has been said to significantly improve the click though of an ad as it is what a user expects to see.

I will report on the results in around 30 days time.

The importance of campaign negative keywords in Google Adwords

I have never really thought about campaign negative keywords too much until I managed the Adwords campaign for a Small Shoes site called Daintyfeet

You can waist clicks and money on keywords that really don’t have ANYTHING to do with your site.

For example for the Hairfreax website these would be keywords that my Ad’s are showing for but have no relevance:

Hair Loss Treatment
Hair Dye
Animal Hair

But these keywords might still cost me impressions and clicks due to the fact that a large proportion of my keywords have hair in them at some point!

In all fairness I am only loosing a few pounds to these keywords a month but that’s a few quid too much!

The most important factor in constructing an Adwords campaign is RELEVANCE. Keep the structure of your campaigns in tune with your site structure and make sure you eliminate any keywords that are not associated with your product/purpose.

Create Ad variations that are specific and point to specific areas on your site. You will get better conversions this way!
